One of the major players in the on-line job search is www.careerbuilder.com . One of the ways they are employing Web 2.0 is through a blog. However, it hasn’t been updated since Feb. 26. This surprises me coming from such a prominent on-line source. What is on the blog seems to be helpful information.

Another feature on Career Builder is the capabillity to ask questions via the website. You can type in your question and an agent is available 24/7 to provide you with an answer.

I just don’t feel like they are taking any large strides to incorporate Web 2.0. Maybe they have some plans in the works. They are still a very successful site, so they must be doing a lot of things right.

I think it is great all these services are becoming available for free to the user. It pushes competition to match the same standards.

Having these different sites dedicated to on-line job networking find my little blog seems a little out there. The web seems so big and it seems that no-one will notice your existence unless you come out in an expensive, big way. It’s nice to see that people are genuinely communicating and finding people. I still have mixed feelings about on-line communication and the good of society, but while it’s here I suppose it is best to embrace it for the good.

I also recently received a comment from www.JobTonic.com I very much appreciated them visiting my blog and recommending their site…here is a bit of the note:

over at www.jobtonic.com,we’re already embracing web 2.0 ideas in a similar way, we have a contact grabber that can import your contacts from gmail, yahoo, msn and outlook on the desktop to name but a few. that’s up and running as of last week so we’d welcome you to come over and take a look!

The site homepage is broken up basically into three parts: job-seekers, referrers(which get paid to refer), and recruiters. One thing that sets them apart is the referring rewards aspect. From what I gather you earn points and get rewards. I was not able to find if it was free or what the fee was. They are definitely embracing a move towards Web 2.0…but there could be more community and interaction. Maybe you have to register to see this, if so I would suggest spotlighting the onling community aspect of it immediately upon opening the site. Tagging seems to be a huge success on these type of sites, too.

This article was posted on the NBC4 Website 3 years ago today entitled: “Sites Offer On-line Job Networking.” http://www.nbc4.com/news/3005196/detail.html

It’s an article from 2004 and the 3 sites they mentioned were Tribe.net, Spoke.com, and ZeroDegrees.com. I decided to see what has become of these cutting edge companies over the past 3 years.

Tribe.net is currently under maintenance and not available, I couldn’t get anything to pull up for ZeroDegrees.com. Spoke.com was the only one that still seemed o be going strong. However, they are not using many Web 2.0 methods. I was sad to see they had not kept up with the times. I believe in order to be a prominent player in the Online Networking game you must find a way to use Web 2.0.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a comment on a post from Jobster’s Christian Anderson. I really appreciated taking the time to leave me a comment.

I’ve attachd a portion of the post b/c it highlights some really neat new Web 2.0 abilities that have recently been added.

There are a few new developments on Jobster that you might like. We expanded the networking functionality so you can now keep track of your network contacts as well as gather references. In the next few weeks, you’ll be able to invite your address book to join you on Jobster. We also introduced a new widget called “Blog Buddy” that show who has visited your site and what jobs they might have available.

I’ve been pretty impressed with Jobster’s growth even over the semester I’ve been covering it. I found this article about Jobster crunching in on Monster.com’s revenue. It is a great article to compliment earlier discussion on here.

Jobster goes to Facebook

So I was way excited to see Jobster: Career Center appear on the facebook news feed when I logged on today. Having covered Jobster earlier in this blog, it was neat to see it join up with facebook, another Web 2.0 outlet. I think this move is genius, it is opening up the idea of online job networking to college age students about to enter the workforce. It’s the perfect audience to pull in. The career center goup already has an active disscusion board and wall. Students are sharing advice and asking for more. Way to go Jobster! Great idea.

A personal note

Well, one reason I choose this topic for my blog was to not only fulfill and assigment but help myself get motivated in the whole career search. I’m graduating in May and I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do with my major. Recently an opportunity kinda fell in my lap—There is a great chance I have a job lined up for next year. It has nothing to do with my major, and I couldn’t be happier. Over the past year I’ve decided my ideal career would be inner-city theater outreach. (I know, not exactly electronic media and communication based occupation) The potential job I’ve been offered would allow me to work with children in the poorer areas of my hometown, and teach them theater and music. It is absolutely perfect.

However, I do intend to let this opportunity open me up to different forms of Web 2.0. I have a feeling I’m going to need a lot of support and advice in this field since I am kinda jumping into it. I hope to locate advice forums or blogs that pertain to non-profit work, inner-city youth, and theater arts for children.

One section of Riley Guide is entitled Job Search. One section talks about the use of internet for searching. I thought this quote was a great example of Web 2.0 qualities through online networking:
